Teaching Philosophy and Accomplishments

My goal as an educator is to provide a safe and positive environment for my students to advance at their craft. I value strong fundamentals, perseverance, and creativity. Each lesson is tailored for the specific student to fit their needs and goals. I seek to inspire my students by setting an example, remaining positive and encouraging, and asking them to self-reflect during lessons. I embrace diversity in my studio and will teach anyone who has a desire to learn. The greatest thrill is watching a student evolve before my eyes, both musically and personally.

Aside from learning how to play music, I want my students to become the best versions of themselves. My hope is for my students to apply how we study and practice music into their everyday lives. As a life-long learner and student myself, I am continuously growing by opening dialog with fellow musicians, attending masterclasses and workshops, and taking lessons with the top flutists in the country. I strive to be a role model for my students to look up to, as I have with each of my teachers.

I teach students of all ages and levels, both in-person and virtually, and in a variety of settings. In my private studio, I teach flute, piccolo, fife, and recorder. My current students range from 4 years old up to 94 years old! My students have received First Division ratings at Solo & Ensemble, studied at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, played in the Detroit Metropolitan Youth Symphony, and have gone on to major in Flute Performance and Music Education. I have helped young kids with instrument fittings before beginning band, teaching each student how to make a sound on the flute to see if it’s a good fit for them. In respect to larger teaching settings, I have served as a woodwind clinician in Farmington, Bloomfield Hills, and Birmingham School Districts as an educational coach through the Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings. I served as the Flute Choir Director for Royal Oak High School from 2018-2020, and at the International Flute Symposium in 2017. I have presented masterclasses and workshops at West Virginia University, Frostburg State University, Harrisburg Symphony Youth Orchestra, the Greater Philadelphia Flute Fair, and the Mid-Atlantic Flute Convention. I have previously served as the Associate Teacher of Flute and Piccolo at the WVU Community Music School, and have taught at the MSU Community Music School in Detroit.
